Margaret Ann Martin Harpole, 76, of Richmond, Virginia, died Friday, July 20, 2007, in Richmond, Virginia.

A memorial service was held July 29 at River Road United Methodist Church in Richmond, Virginia. A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 18, at East Side Cemetery in Martin, with the Rev. Bill Tate officiating. Friends may assemble at the cemetery beginning at 1:30 p.m. Murphy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harpole was born November 13, 1930, in Martin, the daughter of the late John Marshall Martin Sr. and Luella Hefley Martin. The town of Martin was named for her great-grandfather, William Martin. She was a graduate of Martin High School, a third-generation alumni and graduate of Vanderbilt University and a former school teacher. She was a member of River Road United Methodist Church. She and her husband lived in Roanoke, Virginia for 31 years before moving to Richmond in 1993.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution for more than 40 years and held various offices and served on the board of her chapter. She was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America and had served as a docent at Wilton House Museum in Richmond for more than 10 years. She belonged to the Jamestowne Society, the Huguenot Society of Virginia, the Daughters of the Cincinnati and other genealogical, historical, religious, cultural and charitable organizations.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. David Harold Harpole of Richmond, Virginia; a daughter, Lillian Harpole Hazelton, and son-in-law, Merle C. Hazelton, of Richmond, Virginia; a son, Dr. David H. Harpole Jr., and daughter-in-law, Dr. Linda H. Harpole, of Durham, North Carolina; a brother, John M. Martin Jr., and his wife, Dorothy Shands Martin; and six grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be made to River Road United Methodist Church Chapel Fund, 8800 River Road, Richmond, Virginia 23229-7802 or to one's favorite charity.
