Vivian Pearl Friday was born on September 20, 1922, in Fairbury, Neb. She was the daughter of Arthur and Blanche (Hudson) Friday. She was united in marriage to Edward M. Schmitt on June 20, 1945, in Moline. He preceded her in death on February 16, 1993. Vivian was a longtime member of Holy Family Catholic Church and in later years enjoyed attending St. Anthony's Church and serving the needy at McAnthony's Window.
Vivian graduated from business college in 1942. Upon graduation, she began her career as a secretary at International Harvester, Rock Island. She later worked for the Rock Island Lines Railroad, where she met her husband, Edward ("Smitty").
Vivian's greatest pleasures came from spending time with her family, and she cherished watching her grandchildren as they participated in their various activities. She also enjoyed her many travels, including trips to Connecticut, Italy and San Francisco.
Vivian is survived by her nine children: daughters, Barbara (Charles) Puchta, Kathleen Schmitt, all of Bettendorf, Mary Patricia (Dale) Paulson, Davenport, Joan (Mark) Stickler, Bettendorf, Sheila (William) Ehlers, Davenport, Carolyn (Michael) Matthews, Southbury, Conn.; three sons, Thomas (Patty) Schmitt, Glenwood, Iowa, Daniel Schmitt, Davenport, and David (Erin) Schmitt; 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson, Michael Schaecher; and her two brothers, Don and Max Friday. May they rest in peace.
