and Effie Cross (1892-1981)


William Virgil (Bill) Childers was born in 1914 to Emory George Childers & Effie Cross Childers in Rising Star, Eastland, Texas. The oldest of four siblings. They eventually settled in northern Collingsworth County near the community of Samnorwood. There he met his future wife, Anna Ruth Young. After serving as a bombadier/tailgunner on B-17 bombers with Col. Jimmy Doolittle during WWII, Bill was able to return to the Texas Panhandle and marry his sweetheart, Ruth Young. They had three sons while living in Collingsworth County:

1) Billy Don Childers - 1946
2) Joseph Duane Childers - 1947
3) Alvin Lynn Childers - 1950-2012

They settled in Tulia, Swisher County, to raise their boys - and took immense pleasure in all the varied activities in which those boys participated.

Bill died while at the Amarillo Veteran's Hospital in May of 1993 at age 78 and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery at Tulia, Swisher County, Texas.
