In the 1790 census the household of Abner Wells is enumerated in two places at New York. The first place is at Goshen, Orange Co., New York where the census count is 423. The second place is in Chemung, Montgomery Co., New York where the census count is 311.

October 31, 1788 Certificate of survey for Abner Wells, of lot 41, in the town of Chemung, containing 420 acres of land, (Southport, Chemung Co.,) page 50.
March 23, 1791 Certificate of the Surveyor general, that Abner Wells is entitled to lot 41, in the town of Chemung, page 51.

"The pioneers along the Chemung were the McDowells, Bucks, Wyncoops, Bentleys and others. Green Bentley gave the name to Bentley Creek; Abner Wells to Wellsburg, Jacob Lowman to Lowmansville. Captain Abner Wells was a descendant in the fifth generation from William Wells or Wills of Southold, L.I., a different family from the Welles who settled at Tioga Point. Abner gained his title by Revolutionary Service, and was a graduate of Princeton University."

Local history relates Captain Abner Wells sold the present land to the [Wellsburg Baptist] church for 50 cents. A new frame was raised July 12, 1812 with some of the old log meeting house used in the construction.

Abner died aged 59 years.

Reportedly, came to Chemung from Orange Co., New York in 1789. Resided with Mehitable Tracy (Holbrook?) for a spell. [PEN]
