Mathew Augustin Phillips,Jr. was the son of Mathew Augustin Phillips, Sr. and Nancy Harper, both born in Virginia.

He was married to Nancy Dickson October 28, 1847 and had one child, a daughter by the name of Elsie Ray Phillips. Nancy Dickson died July 12, 1854.

Mathew married Elizabeth Virginia Jane Phillips on December 4, 1859 in Troup County Georgia. The marriage was performed by A. J. Scogin, J.P.

He and his wife (Mrs.)Elizabeth Virginia Jane Phillips Owen (widowed) moved to Arkansas before the Civil War. He was a photographer in Mississippi in his younger years. He was a dentist after he moved to Arkansas and remained a dentist for the rest of his life.

He was also a Confederate War Veteran serving as a Medical Doctor, Company B - 15th Arkansas Infantry.

Mathew and Eliza had nine of their own children in addition to Elsie and the two sons by Eliza's first marriage to Dr. Owen, W. Henry Owen, and A. J. Howell Owen.
