Born either in Newville or Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County (his obituary states the latter), Pennsylvania, the son of John Charles & Catherine (Grimes or Greim) Brown, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Newville. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Newville August 30, 1864, overstating his age by three years, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 3 as a private with Co. H, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

After the war, he moved to Renovo, Clinton County, to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad. There he married Alice Nancy Elliott February 12, 1873, and fathered Frank Elliott (b. 02/12/75), George Moore (b. 10/18/76), John Charles (b. 12/01/78), James Raymond (b. 10/01/80), Robert Blaine (b. 06/20/84), William Bruce (b. 04/26/86), Anna Ethel (b. 09/19/88 - married Thomas Raby), Alice Ruth (b. 09/27/91, Benjamin Foster (b. 06/02/94), and Thomas Spencer (b. 10/07/99 - WWI vet).

He was a member of Bucktail Post No. 142, G.A.R. and died at his home from "edema of lungs due to acute dilatation of heart from exertion" even though he was sitting on his chair on his front porch at the time. "Mitral insufficiency" is listed as a contributing factor in his death.
