Harold was born in 1909 and grew up in Wyandot County, Ohio. After his mother's death in 1927 he moved around with his father quite a bit until he married Virgina Smallwood in 1938. They had one child Katherine May in 1940, and divorced in 1945. Harold had a history of mental illness and eventually moved to North Carolina to be cared for by his sister. He died in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1985 and was buried in the family plot in Smithville Cemetery in Ohio.
