OBITUARY: Marlene Merrill passed away February 5, 2008 following a courageous struggle with cancer. Marlene was retired. She is known by many in the community, for more than 20 years of service at the Clark County Department of Community Development, where she worked as a secretary and permit specialist. Marlene, the only child of Rollo and Wava Axley, was born in Silverton, Oregon in 1931. She attended Silverton High School where she was affectionately known as "Ankles" for her unique ice skating style. Marlene's great-grandfather, Joshua Bowen was an early pioneer to the Oregon Territory. At 18, he led his siblings across the Oregon Trail to settle near Silverton following the death of his father along the trail. His mother passed away prior to the journey. Marlene enjoyed her family, friends, playing the piano, singing, writing poetry and reading. She is survived by sons, Michael and wife, Nancy, Scott and wife, Angela, and Mark and wife, Sandi; and daughter, Sandra and husband, Thomas Moore, all of Vancouver. She loved her fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon D. Merrill. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 9, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., at Vancouver Funeral Chapel, 110 E. 12th Street.
