His first wife was Sarah Ann Bruce, and his second wife was Harriet M. Hogue.

William Limes (1814-1892) and Amanda (Rayburn) Limes were the parents of John Limes, who was born in Logan County, Ohio. John's cemetery records state he died at the age of 42 on June 29, 1889.

Harmon Limes Jr. and Mary (McKee) Limes were John's paternal grandparents. William, John's father, was their oldest son.

On September 15, 1872, John Limes married Harriet M. Hogue in West Mansfield, Ohio per the Civil War pension records.

There is a record of a previous marriage for John Limes to Sarah Ann Bruce on September 3, 1866. Sarah Ann was the daughter of William and Mary Bruce. She passed away on August 25, 1872 at the age of 25 at her parents' home (per Hardin County death record – Volume I, page 40). Sarah Ann is buried at the Rushylvania Cemetery, Logan County, Ohio with her record under her maiden name of Bruce.

John Limes and Sarah Bruce Limes had two children: Stella Lena who was born about 1870 and died on September 2, 1881; and Orla H. born on June 19, 1868 and died August 23, 1941. Stella Lena is buried at the Good Hope Cemetery in Logan County, Ohio.

Orla H. Limes is buried at the Ridgeway Cemetery. His wife was a Bessie Lintz. Their children were: Anna Belle Limes (married to Joseph Ehrlich of Louisville, Kentucky); Ernest of Kansas City, Missouri, and Damon of West Alexandria, Ohio.

The Pension General Affidavit lists for widow, Harriet, in 1890, the following minor children:

John Limes and Harriett also had another child, Harry W., who was born March 4, 1874 and died May 4, 1874. He is buried at the Good Hope Cemetery in Logan County, Ohio.

Of note about Ellza Limes, according to Hardin County, Ohio, A Historical Update with Family Histories, 1983, Taylor Publishing Company, page 330 (Ridgeway section), states that Ellza Limes "was the local Ford dealer for many years, a state representative for one term and a member of the local school board for 15 years."

Page 653 of the book History of Hardin County, Ohio by Warner & Beers Company, shows John as being Ridgeway's only grocer in 1880. Also, his military records indicate he was an engineer.

Harriet's cemetery records list she was born in 1852 and died on February 19, 1915, per her Civil War pension records. John and Harriet Limes are buried in the Ridgeway Cemetery, Hale Township, in Hardin County, Ohio.

Pvt. John Limes entered into service on September 11, 1864. He joined the 180th Regiment, Company "I" OVI, at Lima, Ohio. He was discharged on May 28, 1865 in Washington, D.C., where he was sick in the hospital since February 8, 1865. On August 3, 1885, he joined the Coleman Asbury GAR Post # 257 organized at Mount Victory, Hardin County, Ohio.

The 1860 Ohio Census lists Harmon and Milton as two older brothers of John Limes. Milton Limes (1841-1929), served in the 128th Regiment, Company "H" OVI, during the Civil War.
