He attended the Art Students' League in New York City where he studied figure painting, portraiture, etc. He returned to Syracuse and entered the decorating business with his father. He added an architectural woodwork department in Fayetteville to the business.

He married Clara V. Arnold of Memphis Tennessee whom he met when they were both students at the Art Students' League and they had four children: Norma, Althea, Virginia and Emil M.

He belonged to the American Fine Arts Society in New York City, the Citizens' Club, the Syracuse Camera Club and the Frontenac Yacht Club.
