Pruitt was a senior partner with the Los Angeles law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He had been a partner for 30 years and served on the firm's Executive Committee.
In 1967, Pruitt gained some notoriety as the attorney
who asked the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse a California Supreme Court decision striking down a constitutional amendment that gave property owners absolute discretion in the choice of a buyer or a renter.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Jane; his mother; three children; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be private, the family announced.
