Thomas was the son of Mary Ann (Carlton) Murphy, born circa 1842 in North Carolina or Georgia to North Carolina natives Jesse Carlton and Rhoda (Mills) Carlton, who had married in Thomas County, Georgia on February 29, 1844.

1. Mae Murphy Charlton (1896-1971),
2. Martha N. C. Hutchinson Murphy (1860-1942),
3. Thomas Henry Murphy (1862-1902), and,

Additional information was taken from Georgia Marriage Records From Select Counties, 1828-1978 (re: maternal grandparents;) and U.S. Census enumerations for 1850 (mother, with what appear to be her parents and siblings in Coffee County, Alabama,) 1860 (mother, with what appear to be her parents and siblings in Colquitt County, Georgia,) 1870 (with (widowed?) mother and her parents in Colquitt County,) and 1880 (with widowed mother and spouse in Bridge Creek and Moultrie, Colquitt, Georgia.)
