Al Hofer Obituary: written by Christine Mabel House Hofer Hannula

On November 12, 1993, Alfred W. Hofer died. He was 96. Born in Essen, Germany, in 1897. He was the son of Gerhard Hofacker and Anna Poesser (sic, Pröse) Hofacker. At the age of six, he entered New York Harbor’s Ellis Island with his mother and six (sic, it should be 5. Webs came later.) siblings, remembering until death his first view of the Statue of Liberty. His family lived in St. Paul in a German settlement.
As a young man, he and his mother joined his sister in the San Francisco Bay Area. In Richmond he met the treasured wife of almost seventy years whom he now leaves behind, Mary Smith Hofer.
They moved to Lake County in 1948 from San Pablo when he retired early from Union Oil Company in Oleum, a pipe fitter foreman.
This straightforward man won the hearts of many who bought eggs at his ranch, south of Lower Lake.
He outlived three of his and Mary’s four offspring. His remaining daughter, Kathlyn Furnish, lives with her husband, Bill, in Pleasant Hill.
Among those who will remember Al Hofer, and for whom he set a positive standard, are his nine grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren . . .
Al was fond of saying, “Everything we do affects everything and everyone else.” And in his life journey of nearly a century, he recalled how it was to be a child and was fond of children. He was filled with ever-growing love and faith in others. He retained an idealist’s feeling that people are continually improving in all ways. He never lost interest in a world filled with awe-inspiring evidence of the hand of creation.
Cremation was handled at Jones and Lewis Mortuary of Lower Lake. Memorial services are to be held at his and Mary’s home on December 19, 1993.
