Jesse was the son of Richard and Frances Catherine (Johnston) Smith. Jesse's father, Richard, died shortly after his birth, and his mother, Frances, remarried her brother-in-law Bartholomew. The resulting children of these two marriages were then cousins and half-siblings. It has been recalled to family that Bartholomew was not the nicest towards his nephew/ stepson.
