Harry Shafer, one of the best known men in the county, and editor of the Clark's Hill News, died at his home in Clark's Hill at 9:30 o'clock last night, after and illness of many weeks. Death was caused by Bright's disease. He had been in ill health for several months, but had not given up his work until three weeks ago. He had suffered intensely for the past week. The deceased was one of the most prominent men in Lauramie township, where he had spent most all of his life. He was born in Lafayette, November 24, 1852, and at the age of 16 years began teaching school, and continued his position as an educator for 26 years. During that time he was principal of the Colfax and Clark's Hill high schools. Eight years ago he established the Clark's Hill News, a Republican paper. Mr. Shafer had been its editor continuously since its establishment.
He was a staunch Republican and worked hard and faithfully for the good and welfare of the party. He was a good political writer and commanded recognition throughout the county. He took a decided stand against the liquor traffic in his township and led several crusades against the saloon men. He was a public spirited man and was interested in every good cause. The deceased was a member of pathfinder Lodge No. 18, Miller Lodge No. 268, R. and A. M., and of the Christian church. He was a man of strong character and principles, and had the courage of his convictions. In his death the county loses one of its best residents. He is survived by a wife and five children. The funeral will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock under the auspices of the Masonic lodge.
