Lois Amelia Sanford was the first wife of Thomas Loney. They married on September 28, 1859 in Smartsville, California, and became the parents of one son, William, who died young. They had both grown up in Canada, both travelling west to California in different years and on separate journeys. It was their destiny to come together in the vibrant new state of California and marry. Sadly, it was a star-crossed union, and young Lois Amelia died in Grass Valley at the tender age of 28 in 1861. She was the daughter of James Sanford and Sara Woolaver, both of Canada. Her paternal grandmother was named Freedom Strong (1766-1856). Lois' husband Thomas Loney would eventually re-marry (her neice, Sarah MacDougall), and father eight children.
