Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 22009 East 19th Rd., Nokomis. Funeral services will follow at noon at the church.
Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery.
Mrs. Compton was born in Nokomis, Rountree Township, Montgomery County, on March 25, 1922, the daughter of the late Theodore and Lena (Janssen) Westphal. She married Everett E. Meier in Nokomis on Dec. 24, 1942, and he preceded her in death in January 1972. She then married Lawrence "Bus" Compton in Nokomis on Sept. 26, 1976, and he preceded her in death in December 2008.
The youngest of nine children, she attended Shoal Creek and St. Paul's Lutheran grade schools. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Nokomis and the Montgomery County Farm Bureau.
In earlier years, Mrs. Compton enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and canning and freezing her produce. She also made jams, jellies and baked bread in the winter. She sewed, making clothes for herself, daughter, nieces and for dolls. In later years after meeting Lawrence, she was a woodworker and took up crafts and tole painting.
Mrs. Compton also enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes, and her favorite pets were cats. She and Lawrence traveled in their truck and camper throughout the United States, including Alaska. She enjoyed her grandchildren, especially when she could help them with fishing or doing other country things.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol Meier (husband Alex) Ferguson of Springfield; stepchildren, Loren (wife Chris) Compton, Dean (wife Brenda) Compton and Carol (husband Jim) Beeler, all of Nokomis; grandchildren, Ben Ferguson of Springfield, Zach (wife Cassidy) Ferguson of St. Charles, MO, and Jacob Ferguson of Charleston, S.C.; stepgrandchildren, Lane and Morgan Compton of Nokomis, April (husband Jeff) Drake of Mattoon, Laura Compton of Springfield, Marcie (husband Jacob) Stevens of New Douglas and Greg (wife Lindsay) Beeler of Sidney; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Marcella Westphal Sullivan.
In addition to her parents, first husband and second husband, Mrs. Compton was preceded in death by eight siblings, John, Matilda, William (wife Helen G.), Edgar (wife Marcella), Clarence (wife Marguerite), Ernest in infancy, Vernon (wife Orlieu) and Alvin (wife Helen M.).
Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Nokomis, the Alzheimer's Association or the charity of the donor's choice.
