Henry Christian Hartwig was born in Germany around 1808. Henry and his family emigrated around 1846. He purchased land in Lewis County in April 1853 near the Clark County border at St. Patrick, MO. He resided there until his death when he set his house on fire with his wife Caroline and son John Lewis inside. He escaped the fire, as did his wife and child, only to hang himself in the barn. Because of this event it is very possible that he was buried on the farm on not in a church cemetery. There are variations in the last name from Hartwig/Hardwick/Hartwick which are all found in census records and legal documents. It can be derived from his will that Henry could not write as an X is given as his signature.

Their children include:

Johana Hartwig Felte (abt 1843 - unknown)

Henry August Hartwig (abt 1845 - unknown)

Henry William Hartwig (1852 - 1936)

John Lewis "Lou" Hartwig (1855 - 1927)
