37th Buckeye Div. - World War I

Albert J. Thomas married Mattie M. Hopkins on May 2, 1922 in Hancock County, Ohio.

Albert J. Thomas, 105, a resident of Good Shepherd Home, and formerly of Perrysburg Road, died at 2:38 p.m., Feb. 20, 2002, at the nursing home.

He was born May 17, 1896, in Hancock County to James and Eliza (Grant) Thomas.

He married Mattie M. Hopkins on May 2, 1922, in Findley, and she died June 16, 1968.

Surviving are one son, Junior R. Thomas, Clyde; two daughters, Florence Burgbacher and Bernita Hakes, both of Fostoria; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Thomas retired in 1961 as a finisher for Union Carbide Co., after more than 28 years.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War I, serving in the 37th Buckeye Division.

He was a member of American Legion, VFW, Eagles Club and AMVETS, all in Fostoria.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Harrold-Floriana Funeral home, with Chaplain Jim Sampson officiating. Burial will be in Arcadia Cemetery, with military rites by Joint Veterans Group of Fostoria.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Home.
