Private Co H, 4th California Infantry
James Monroe Andress was the son of William Andress (1801, NY-1875, IA) and Nancy Ambler (1801, CT-1876, IA). While still a boy he moved with his parents to Fayette County, Iowa. As a young man James headed west to seek his fortune in California's gold fields. After the coming of the Civil War, he enlisted as a private at Nevada City September 4, 1864, and was mustered into Company H, 4th California Infantry, September 21. Private Andress was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco July 3, 1865 (Orton, 652). After the war he returned to his parent's farm in Iowa. He married Elzora R. Page at Illyria Township in Fayette County on August 8, 1875, and acquired his own farm outside Fairfield, also in Fayette County. He appears as a farmer at Fairfield in the 1885 and 1895 Iowa Census. James applied for a Civil War veteran's disability pension in Fayette County April 6, 1885, and received application No. 536,894 and certificate No. 343,381. His wife Elzora died just two weeks after giving birth to their tenth child, Roy, in 1892. James was living at Monticello, Iowa, in 1900 (1900 US Census). James was admitted to the Western Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Leavenworth, Kansas, July 25, 1913. He was discharged from the Soldiers' Home at his own request June 24, 1918, and returned to Fayette County, Iowa, where he remained until he died (1920 US Census).
