The son of John Michael Cormany (1745-1828), a German immigrant from Edenkoben, and his Pennsylvanian wife Catherine Meyer (1750-1832). He grew up in Wythe County, Virginia, but later moved to Atkins in Smyth County.

He married Barbara Reusch on February 24, 1795 while still living in Wythe County. They had seven children: John (1796-), Joseph (1797-), Elizabeth (1798-), Catherine (1799-), Barbara (1812-1854), Malinda (1817-1877) and Lucretia (1818-1866). His wife Barbara died on September 12, 1850, and Michael joined her in Heaven three years later in May 1853, aged 79.

He and his father was usually recorded in census records as Michael Cormany, so I am unsure if his birth name was Michael Cormany, or John Michael Cormany, Jr.
