Clara married John Asmus in North Dakota in 1918. They had three children, a son, Clifford Wayne, and two daughters, Julia Henrietta and Inez Lorraine. When John's health was failing he moved into a nursing home while Clara and daughter Julia continued to live in the old homestead although it was then owned and farmed by Daniel Asmus' grandson Elmer Adrian.
