Edward was primarily a dairyman. In Feb 1893 he established the first milk delivery service in the Sandy Spring area and in December that year he established the Belmont Dairy in Washington, DC. In Jan 1901 he took sons Edward Clifton & Richard Bentley and son-in-law George Brooke Farquhar into partnership under the name E P Thomas & Sons. Later that year he was appointed by Governor Smith to represent Maryland as a delegate at the National Farmers' Convention in Macon, GA. In 1905 the dairy partnership was incorporated as the Belmont Dairy Company, and this included the aforesaid sons and son-in-law, AND his daughter Edith.

Interspersed with all this dairy activity, in 1887 he was on the Board of Directors of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Montgomery County, MD. In 1890 he was appointed postmaster of Ednor. In 1895 he was elected President of the aforesaid fire insurance company. In 1907 he had some prize-winning apples at the Jamestown Exposition at Norfolk, VA.

Married 30 Nov 1865, they were the parents of: Edith Bentley (1866-1955; m. George Brooke Farquhar); Mary E (1870-1968); Richard Bentley (1873-1957; m. Ethel M Farquhar); Edward Clifton Sr (1875-1937; m. Elizabeth Orme Mannakee; Augustus Needles (1877-???; m. Robert Nathan); and Samuel Patrick (1885-1953; m1. Miriam Snowden; m2 Clara Evelyn Fulks).

On 1 Dec 1915 a very unusual event occurred: Edward and Mary celebrated with Golden Wedding Anniversary which was attended by their *entire* wedding party! Of these six, all but one still lived in Sandy Spring and the bride & groom, within 1.5 miles of their birth places.
