Ending an earthly journey and residing in eternal peace, Thelma Hassen Hoggard, 77, of East Lansing, died, Friday, August 6, 2010, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.
Thelma was born to loving parents, Joseph Hassen (Abu-Hassen Sakr) and Mabel Mary (Merriam) Hassen in Saginaw, on Jan. 20, 1933. She was one of 12 siblings, two of which died while infants. She graduated from Saginaw Arthur Hill High School. Thelma's many talents enabled her to enjoy a variety of employment opportunities including accounting clerk for Continental Fibre Drum, restaurant manager, bridal consultant, and clerk for the Michigan Secretary of State.
Thelma was an avid supporter of the arts and education. She was a member of The Lansing Symphony League, The Friends of Kresge Art Museum, The National Speakers Association, and Eastminster Presbyterian Church. She was a past member of the Tri-City Chapter of the Sweet Adelines. She enjoyed hobbies that monitored current political and financial trends and was an extensive genealogist, tracing her Merriam roots back to the Revolutionary War at Lexington and Concord and beyond.
Thelma married Richard Dale Hoggard on March 1, 1952. He predeceased her on April 3, 1975.
