Richard was raised a Quaker. His parents, Richard Hallock Sr and Anna Tucker were married in meeting in Queensbury, NY in a meeting house built by her father, Abraham Tucker. Richard Jr married Anna Babcock. They were living in the mid west when he went to California during the gold rush in 1849. On his way home he caught colera and died on the isthmas of Panama, according to his travel companions, and is burried there. His children retained the name of Hallock, but Anna remarried Mr. Austin. There were children from his first marriage, and they had one or two children together (Charles S. Austin). He then disappeared. Richard Jr is grandson of David Hallock and Grace Burling. He is listed in the Hallock and Burling genealogies. Although David was a strong Quaker, he and his brother Jesse donated food to the Patriot Army during the Revolutionary War. They farmed land together while they raised their families in VT, on land owned by Edward Burling. They married sisters; Grace and Phoebe. Many Hallock descendants live in VT and MN today of these lines. John the Quaker is their ancestor. Other children of Richard Jr; Lydia (married her stepbrother John Austin), George B and Rhoda who married Almon D Farrar.
