Louis was born March 28, 1868 to Lewis and Mary (Slack) Vaughan.

In 1890, Louis left home looking for work. He went to Girard, Kansas. Here he met Lucy Dunlap, the daughter of Levi C. and Sarah Utilla Dunlap. They were married on December 22, 1892 in Girard, Kansas.
Lucy and Louis had following eight children, Guy D. died of Scarlet Fever at age 9, Levi, Alice Utilla, Lewis Dee died of Whooping Cough when two weeks old, Paul Eugene, Mary, George and Mardell.Louis and Lucy moved to Donora, Pennsylvania around 1924. Here Louis found work in the smelters at a steel mill. He was 55 years old at the time and they were not hiring anyone over the age of 50. He lied about his age and got a job.

On October 7, 1950, Lucy died in Pittsburg, Kansas. Louis died of Parkinson's disease in New Eagle, Pennsylvania on March 22, 1953. He is buried in Monongahela Cemetery in Monongahela, Pennsylvania. His son, Paul visited him over the last 18 months of his father's life. Even though Louis had Parkinson's and couldn't remember where he was, he would sit and tell Paul about a barn he had built in Arkansas. He talked about the construction as though it was being build now. In 1990, Paul died in Bakersfield, California of Parkinson's disease like his father.
