Betty Finnegan Doherty was a member of the first graduating class of Lamar High School, Houston, where she was crowned the school's first Queen of the May Fete and Senior Beauty. Betty attended The Hockaday School and graduated from the University of Texas, where she was one of Ten Most Beautiful and member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and NUTS. She was honored as a Bluebonnet Belle and Duchess of the Tyler Rose Festival. Betty was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church for over 50 years, as well as a member of the River Oaks Garden Club, River Oaks Country Club, and the Junior League of Houston. She contributed in many volunteer capacities, including TIRR, the Ben Taub Emergency Room, Jeff Davis Hospital, and served on the Board of the DePelchin Faith Home. Betty's livelong devotion was to her loving husband and six children. She also enjoyed tennis and gardening, and she loved to shop. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and William N. Finnegan II; her brother, William N. Finnegan III; and son, Robert Finnegan Doherty.
She is survived by her lucky and fortunate husband of 62 years, Bill Doherty, with whom she shared their first date 68 years ago; her sister, Mary Margaret Finnegan Perry McDonald; daughter, Betsy Doherty Jones; sons and daughters-in-law Billy and Jan Doherty, Mike and Chrissy Doherty, Pat and Susan Doherty, and Casey and Julie Doherty; sixteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Patricia Doherty Bartlett and Mary Ellen Finnegan; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at ten o'clock in the morning on Saturday, the 24th of February, at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Road in Houston, with the Rev. John Rooney as officiant. The grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. Immediately following the service, all are invited to join the family for a reception in the Parish Hall. The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to caregivers Robert Good, Natalie Cordova, Irene Evans, and Jessica Garcia. The family would also like to share a special thought at this time with Betty's lifelong friend and companion, Hattie Sparks. For those desiring, memorial contributions in Betty's name may be made to the School Scholarship Fund at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, 6622 Haskell St., Houston, TX 77007-2097; or to the charity of your choice.
