She attended Vassar College and graduated from Barnard College. She devoted her life to the creative and healing arts, working at the Riverdale Mental Health Association and serving on its Board of Directors for many years. As a result of her experience caring for her first husband (Jonathan Brewster Bingham), she also established a volunteer corps at what was then Columbia Presbyterian Hospital for the development of Trained Liaison Comforters to assist the terminally ill and their families.
The author of two biographies, Courage to Change: An Introduction to the Life and Thought of Reinhold Niebuhr and U Thant: The Search for Peace, Mrs. Bingham Birge also wrote plays based on themes from American history, such as the rivalry between Eleanor Roosevelt and Alice Roosevelt Longworth. She contributed to the family memoir, Lots of Lehmans.
She had four children with her first husband, Sherrell Bingham Downes, Timothy W. Bingham, and Claudia Bingham Meyers; and June Mitchell (Micki) Esselstyn.
