Gottlieb was born in the village of Erbstetten, Württemberg to David Kinzer and Margaretha (Hausermann) Kinzer. In 1847, he and his brother Johann David applied to the government of Württemberg to emigrate. They left Erbstetten on 25 Oct 1848 and made their way to Ohio, probably living with their uncle Johannes Kinzer in Sandusky Twp., Crawford Co. for a period of time. Later, he settled in Eden Twp. Seneca Co. Ohio where he married Regina Catharina Heiserman (also from Württemberg) on 03 Mar 1851.
