Leston L. Haynes, 79, Merriam, [Johnson Co., KS] a former Merriam city councilman, died Oct. 23, 1988, at the Life Care Center of Overland Park, [Johnson Co., KS] 7541 Switzer St. Mr. Haynes served three terms on the council from 1961 to 1967. He was a foreman in the parts department at Dean Machinery Co. and retired in 1973. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Mark's on the Santa Fe Trail United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Merriam Optimist Club and the Overland Park Masonic Lodge. He was born in Preston, [Pratt Co.,] Kan., and lived in Merriam 39 years. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Haynes of the home; a stepson, Porter H. Mitchell, Littleton, [Arapahoe Co.,] Colo.; a stepdau., Sylvia Anne Hyde, Springfield, [Greene Co.,] Mo.; a brother, Laurence Haynes, Kansas City, Kan.; a sister, Eva Snodgrass, Mesa, [Maricopa Co.,] Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Cremation. Private services will be Saturday in Haynesville Cemetery, Preston. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The family suggests contributions to the Merriam Optimist Club in care of Joseph Zuck, 6734 Riley St., Overland Park 66204, or to the Kansas City Hospice.
