Rebecca was the daughter of Leonard Mortimer Layton and Elizabeth (nee Tatterson) Layton. She wed Alfred DeForrest Cartwright on January 4, 1845 and came to California in 1850. For the most part, they lived in Oakland where Alfred was a railroad mechanic. She was survived by her brothers Richard, Garret, and Leonard.
