GRANBURY -- DIRKS, Donald C., MD a Radiation Oncologist of Granbury, formerly of Ft. Worth, died peacefully at home surrounded by family on October 7, 2012.
Memorial service: October 13, 2012 at 1pm at the Lakeside Baptist Church in Granbury, Texas. Senior Pastor Mark Forrest will officiate.
Born September 17, 1933 in Grimes Iowa, Dr. Dirks was the 4th of 7 children born to The Reverend and Mrs. George F. Dirks who preceded him in death. A country boy with few means, Dr. Dirks joined the U.S. Armed Forces in 1951. He served our Nation proudly for four years during the Korean War. On the GI Bill Don received his Undergraduate Degree from the University of Kansas - Lawrence in 1958. He then went on to receive his Doctorate in Medicine from the Kansas University School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kansas in the summer of 1962. He completed his Internship in Kansas City and his Residency in Denver. In 1963 Dr. Dirks started his first Family Practice in Satanta, Kansas where he also served as the County Coroner till 1966. The wind blew and Dr. Dirks then found himself hanging a shingle in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1972, he set up shop in Ft. Worth, Texas as a Radiation Oncologist it was there that he semi-retired in 2005. Up until the time of his death, Dr. Dirks helped out at the Cleburne Cancer Center and the Texas Cancer Care of Ft. Worth. Throughout his career Dr. Dirks served on various committees. He was most proud of his appointments with the American Cancer Society where he served as Area VI Vice President of the Texas Division. He was a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, The Tarrant County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association.
In 1990 Dr. Dirks met his beloved wife Sherra (Clay) who survives him. They married December 31, 1992 at which time they combined their two families of adult children. In 2001 they finished construction of "their" house on 60 acres of land in Granbury. This would be the place of many family vacations and of course Christmas dinners. Don loved the outdoors and wanted to share that with his new family making sure that the kids would have an endless supply of fish to catch, dove to hunt and trails to discover. He raised cows, chickens and turkeys. He shared his organic garden bounty with any and all. He and Sherra travelled the globe but his favorite place on earth was that ranch. Not a conversation could be had that didn't involve the latest score of the Rangers or the Cowboys!
A loving father, Don leaves behind his son Michael Dirks and wife Laurie and their 3 children, his daughter Kim Dirks, his step-son Christopher Tarpley and wife Robin and their 2 children, his step-son Curtis Dean Tarpley and wife Susie and their 2 children, his step-daughter Tina Anderson and husband Tony and their 3 children and 2 great-grandchildren. A Cherished brother, Don leaves behind his sister Hazel Alter, brother Robert Dirks and wife Delores, sister Ruth Lantosh, sister Janice Eisenbeisz and husband Gary, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Dr. Dirks is preceded in death by brother Paul Dirks and sister Eunice Dirks.
