Farnhamville – Wash Grimes, 94, Farnhamville's last Civil War veteran, died Tuesday at the home of his son, Elra, with whom he had lived for several years. Mr. Grimes had been ill only since Saturday.

Funeral services, with military honors, were held this afternoon (Thursday) at the Congregational church. Mr. Grimes will be buried in Reading cemetery beside his wife.

He was born in Kentucky and came with his parents to Davis County, Iowa at the age of 15. At the age of 19, he enlisted in the 45th Iowa infantry, Company D, and served until the Civil War ended.

Mr. Grimes was married Oct. 4, 1868, to Elizabeth Summers at Russell, Iowa. They were together over 65 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Grimes came to this community in 1872 and operated a hotel here for 25 years. They were the parents of six children, two of whom survive.

They are Elra of Farnhamville and Ollie of Kansas.
