Kavanaugh was wouned three times during the Civil War. In 1883, he became chaplain of the KY penitentiary, then located in Frankfort. A resident of Logan Street, Kavanaugh retained that office until his death. He should not be confused with his relative Bishop H.H. Kavanaugh, a minister at the Frankfort Methodist Church in the 1830s who was buried in Louisvilles Cave Hill Cemetery.
