On 5 June 1917, Sweetwater, Wyoming; Abenicio (B: 24 June 1895, Ranchos de Taos) registered for the World War I draft. He was described as tall, slender, brown eyes, dark hair, and a sheep herder in Rock Springs, Wyoming (draft card).

On 5 Jun 1917, Point of Rock, Wyoming; Abenicio (B: 24 Jun 1895, Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico) enlisted in the US Army. His parents were identified as Felix Romero and Rosalia Mondragon. On 17 September 1917, Wyoming; he entered service at Green River, Wyoming (serial #2 260 267). From 21 September 1917 to 24 March 1918, he was posted at Camp Lewis, Washington with Company D, 362nd Infantry Regiment. He was then posted to Camp Merritt, New Jersey until departing to France on 9 May 1918. On 21 May 1918, he arrived at Brest, France. From Brest, he moved to Soisson where he was assigned to Company C, 18th Infantry Regiment. From 18-22 July 1918, he was in the Battle of Soisson. From 12-13 September 1918, he was in the Battle of St. Mihiel. From 4-10 Oct 1918, he was in the Battle of Argonne, where he was wounded in the right foot and hospitalized. On 15 April 1919, Abenicio was honorably discharged at Fort D. A. Russell, Wyoming (New Mexico World War I records).
