Dr. John Augustus Butler was born in Whigham Town, Decatur, Georgia and died in Arlington, Calhoun, Georgia. He was married to Adna Lucinda Bostwick on Oct. 31, 1878 in Whigham. They removed to Arlington in 1878 when he started his medical practice.

"Thus has passed away one of Arlington's good citizens, the people commemorating the sad event by closing their houses of business and repairing to the Methodist church, where appropriate services were held, thence to the cemetery where they performed the last rites of Christian burial, and there his remains rest in the hope of eternal life." LHS
LHS wrote his obit and was the headmaster of an Academy in Blakely where Dr. John started school in 1874. Dr John was also a clerk in the mercantile establishment of Butler and Broome in Blakely. He read medicine with Dr. Murchison in Blakely in 1875. In 1876 went to Baltimore, Maryland to attend Medical College (now John Hopkins) and then graduated from Medical College in Augusta, GA in 1878
