Ethel M. Van Meter, 100, of Hinton died Saturday, August 29, 1992, at Hallmark Care Center in Sioux City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hinton United Methodist Church with Rev. Stan Long officiating. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Massena, Iowa. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Christy Morningside Funeral Home at Sioux City.

Mrs. Van Meter, the former Ethel Shields, was born April 28, 1892, at Massena. She lived six years near Fargo, North Dakota, and returned to Massena. She married Walter D. Hancock in 1910 at Creston. He died in 1937. She married Everett Van Meter in 1938 at Des Moines. They moved to Carroll in 1940. He died in August 1960 and she moved to Hinton in 1973. She served as the Massena city clerk and operated the Central Cafe at Massena for 13 years. She also was employed as a bookkeeper at the Carroll Lumber Company. She had been a seamstress since the age of 8. Mrs. Van Meter was a member of the Hinton United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and had been treasurer of the Carroll United Methodist Church for more than 15 years. She was a member of the Hinton Garden club, Hinton Senior Citizens, and former member of the Hinton Book club. She was a Past Worthy Matron of Signet Chapter 1, Order of Eastern Star at Carroll. She was an Avid bridge player.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Hazel and Webb Heue of Hinton; stepdaughter, Betna Dougherty of Atlantic; a sister, Mrs. Frances Marlowe of Livermore, California; a grandson, Thomas Luin of Cary, North Carolina; a great-grandson, Chuck Luin of Atlantic; two great-granddaughters, Jennifer and Sarah Luin of Gary, North Carolina; a step great-granddaughter, Glenna Luin of Florida; and two other gtep-granddaughters.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Winifred and Feme; a grandson, Preston H. Luin Jr.; and four brothers and two sisters.
