Born in Lake City, on May 31, 1922, Jean was a daughter of the late Oscar and Annie Laurie Baldwin. She also was preceded in death by her husbands Joseph W. Carter and V Admiral Forest Pete Petersen; sisters, Flora Baldwin and Margarita Baldwin Porter.
Jean was a retired personnel director for Litton Bionetics in Washington, D.C., and was in charge of the Cherry Blossom Princesses for the Cherry Blossom festival in Washington. She was a member of the Olivet Presbyterian Church and the Lake City Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a son, Preston D. Carter and his wife, Lisa, and their daughters Sadie and Emily, all of Charlottesville Va.; stepchildren, Nels Peterson, Forest Petersen, Lynn Monje and their families; nieces, Jane Porter Fogleman, Anne Baldwin Porter, Jean Mason Porter, Sarah Claiborne Porter and their families.
There will be a memorial service held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, at The Colonnades on Barracks Road, which had been Jeans home for the past 15 years. Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005, in the Lake City Cemetery in the family plot.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made to the Charlottesville/Albermarle Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 160, Charlottesville, VA 22902. Hill &Wood Funeral Home and Brockington Funeral Home in South Carolina are in charge of the arrangements.
