Richard Neil Asay, 89, died Aug 5, 2011 at home surrounded by members of his family.
Richard was born in Alamosa, Colo., on Dec 26, 1921 to Harry and Clara (Crooks) Asay, the 11th of 14 children. The family farm was a place of hard work, but also much fun, and the antics of the boys have provided never ending hilarious stories of "back when" at family gatherings.
He leaves his wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Boggs) Asay; four sons and their spouses, Dan (Kathy), Ken (Suniti), Neil (Katrina), and Paul (Alice); five grandchildren Jesse and Dustin (Ken); Trea, Trevor, Dane (Neil); three great grandchildren, Triston, Trace, Tate (Trea) one sister Ruth Dabritz; three sister-in-law,, Helen asay, Barbara Asay, Wilma Orr; numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends.
From 1942 to 1945 Richard served with the Army's 171st Evacuation Hospital following the troops as they advanced through North Africa and Italy.
In 19946 he and Dorothy were married and moved to Davis where he enrolled in UCD's "Curriculum in Agriculture" and graduated with a degree in Horticulture.
Longing for a return to the farm, he moved his family to Center, Colo., where he worked for the Colorado A&M Extension Farm. In 1956, he returned to UCD where he spent the next 30 years as a Research Associate, specializing in many aspects of Almond Research. He had a life long passion for all things growing, and thoroughly enjoyed his hours in the almond orchards.
His love of the outdoors led him to participation in Scouting, serv8ing as Scoutmaster for Troop 111, to membership in Fly fishers of Davis, to backpacking expeditions with his family and friends and many trips of discovery up and down the State of California.
Upon retirement in 1985, he and his wife ventured to Star Valley, where they put down roots for the next 20 years. Health concerns brought them back "home" to Davis in 2006 where he remained until his death.
A memorial service will be held at Davis Community Church on Sept 10 at 3 p.m.
