Joan Thearle, 79, former S.D. resident, dies in Norfolk, Va.: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

San Diego Union, The (CA) - Sunday, May 11, 1986
Deceased Name: Joan Thearle, 79, former S.D. resident, dies in Norfolk, Va.
Joan MacFarland Thearle, 79, a long-time San Diego resident, died of cancer yesterday in a hospital in Norfolk, Va., after about a year's illness.
She was the widow of the naval architect and marine engineer, the late Philip Hampton Thearle, son of the founder of Thearle's Music Co., one of the city's earliest and most successful music businesses.
She was a native of the San Francisco Bay area, but she and the family had lived most of her adult life in various parts of San Diego, including Mount Helix, Point Loma and Pine Valley. They also lived in an 85-foot schooner on the bay for about two years, her son recalled. She recently had moved to Norfolk.
In San Diego, she was active in PTA and various community projects, but spent most of her time traveling with and assisting her late husband, her son said.
She is survived by two sons, Philip Hampton Thearle II of Pine Valley and retired Navy Capt. W. James Thearle of Norfolk, Va., and seven grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
No services are planned, and burial arrangements are incomplete.
