Memorial services for Philip H.
Thearle, 72, a Pauma Valley
citrus rancher and retired naval
architect and marine engineer,
will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow in
Palm Mortuary in Escondido.
He died Tuesday in a hospital.
Thearle was born in Chicago.
His father, Ernest, a founder
of the Thearle Music Co.,
died in 1919.
Brought to San Diego County
in 1900 by his parents, who
settled on a citrus ranch at
Nestor, Thearle was graduated
from San Diego High School
before attending Lick-Wilmering
Technical School in San Francisco.
Later he was a marine engineer
there.
From 1953 to 1959 Thearle had
an office in Point Loma. Among
vessels he designed was the
Alert, a city life-guard patrol
boat commissioned in July.
Thearle was a member of the
San Diego Yacht Club and the
Society of Naval Architects and
Marine Engineers.
Surviving are his widow, Joan;
two sons, Philip II of Pauma
Valley and Navy Lt. W. James
Thearle, stationed at the Naval
Academy in Annapolis; two
brothers, and two grandchildren.
