Peter married (1) Emma Wheeler, (2) Barbara Estep (1862-1906), and (3) Esther Lamphear Sebaugh. He had seven children with Emma and two children with Barbara.

Peter enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 16 on December 18, 1861. His service covered three years, 10 months and 15 days. He was twice a prisoner of war, once through the surrender of his regiment and once through capture. He first served in Company H of the 50th Indiana Infantry Regiment and starting in 1864, Company B of the 50th Indiana Infantry and later Company B of the 52nd Indiana Residuary Battalion.

By 1869, Peter had moved his family near the town of Grey Eagle, Todd County, Minnesota. After his first wife died, Peter returned to Jackson County to marry Barbara Estep. After a time in Hartford, Minnesota, Peter brought his family back to Grey Eagle.

Peter was a member of the first United Brethren Church in Grey Eagle. He was first a lay preacher and then became ordained in 1892 and served in various United Brethren churches. Peter retired from the ministry about 1909 and settled back in Grey Eagle.
