James died in Natchitoches Regional Medical Center from complications arising from diabetes. His wife Theresa Jeanette Veazey Free survived him, as well as his children Michael James Free, Cecelia Renee Free Denham and Jodie Monee Free. His daughter Dana Jeanine Free preceded him in death.
