Alice M. Anderson, age 89, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Ashland Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on Nov. 27, 1911, in Ashland, the daughter of Andrew and Mary (Johnson) Melstrand of Benoit.
Alice graduated from Ashland High School and then continued her education at the Ashland General Hospital Nursing Program. Thereafter she worked as a private nurse for a few years, and then at Trinity Hospital and Memorial Medical Center as a nursing supervisor and recovery room nurse.
On Oct. 16, 1940, she married Thomas E. Anderson in Ashland. They lived in Ashland and Washburn. Alice was a member of Saron Lutheran Church, the VFW Auxiliary and the Pythian Sisters. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Peg (Howard) Sandin, Ashland; two grandsons, Nils Sandin, Hancock, Mich., and Benjamin Sandin, Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Margaret (Walter) Cederberg, Ashland; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas, in 1990; four brothers, Harold, John, Raymond and George; three sisters, Desideria Olson, Grace Bodin and Helen Kontny; a half brother, Carl; and two half sisters, Hildegarde Elliot and Annabelle McGinnis.
A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, at Saron Lutheran Church in Ashland. The Rev. Edward Zaiser will officiate. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date.
