Rev Hutchison did not get a formal theological degree but studied theology privately. He was ordained in 1883 by the Lutheran Church. A year later, in 1884, he was received by the Presbytery of Chicago in Illinois, at which point he became a Presbyterian minister. He served as the pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Lansing, Iowa (1884-1891). From there, he went on to pastor congregations in Oregon, Washington, and then in Tacoma, Washington.
