The Evening Star, August 7, 1871
The funeral of the late John H. Wise took place yesterday afternoon at the East Washington M.P. Church, and was attended by the Columbia Lodge I.O.O.F., of which deceased was a member, and by a large number of citizens generally. The services were conducted by Pastor Wilson, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Sweet, of the Odd Fellows. A section of the Marine Band, under Prosperi, accompanied Columbia Lodge. The remains, which were enclosed in a beautiful coffin provided by Mr. William Hackett, undertaker, were interred in the Congressional Cemetery, after the funeral rites of the Odd Fellows, conducted by Chaplain George F. Timms.
