Obituary of Neil E. MacKinnon-Sydney Post
Many in Cape Breton, and in other parts of Canada and the U.S.A., will learn with regret of the death of Neil E. MacKinnon, who died at his old home, Kempt Head, after a brief illness on February 7, 1940 at the age of sixty-six, fortified by the last rites of the Catholic Church of which he he was a devout member.
In the passing of the late Mr. MacKinnon, Victoria County loses on of its most prominent citizens, and his family a loving husband and a devoted father. Mr. MacKinnon spent most of his life in his native province except a short period spent in Arizona in his younger days. For the last forty years or more, he engaged in farming, merchandising and lumbering.
He always took an active part in politics, a staunch liberal and he represented his district in the County Council for fifteen consecutive years. His passing will be greatly mourned, particularly by the people of Boularderie, for he was always active in every move for the benefit of his County and district.
He is survived by his wife, formerly Margaret MacNeil of Glasco, C.B., four sons and six daughters: John A. living at New Victoria; High, Assistant Lighthouse Keeper, Low Point; Winifred, at Kempt Head, Boularderie, Neil Henry on the old homestead; Emily, a former graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace bay, now Mrs. Alexander MacNeil, Roxbury Mass.; Mary, Mrs. James Snow, Medford; Donandrea, Mrs. Frederick Gervasi, Quincy, Mass; Anne, Mrs. Hugh Dickson, Salem, Mass.; Isabel, Sister Mary Lucina of the Order of the Sisters of St. Martha, now missioned at Mercy Hospital, Sydney, Agnes, Mrs. David MacPhee, Roxbury, Mass. Two other children predeceased him, Joseph, who began his second year at St. Francis Xavier University died May 5, 1935 and Lucy, Mrs. Peter MacIntyre, Boularderie West, died February 28, 1928. He is also survived by 37 grandchildren.
The funeral was held Saturday morning February 10, from his home to St. Joachim's Church where requiem Mass was said by the Rev. A. A. Ross, C.C. The splendid turn out of Catholics and non-Catholics alike, testified to the great esteem in which people held Mr. MacKinnon.
