Portsmouth - Joyce Pullen Sykes Backus, 81, of the 900 block of Elmhurst Lane passed away on Saturday, Sept, 8, 2012. She was a native of Halifax County, N.C. and was the wife of the late Roy Ray Sykes and the late Homer C. Backus. She owned and operated Joyce's Beauty Shop for40 years and was a charter member of Living Waters Christian Fellowship.
She is survived by a daughter, Cecelia Sykes Drake and husband Michael of Portsmouth; two sisters, Elizabeth Bemis and husband Royce of Charlotte, N.C., Helen Cole and husband William of Rome, Ga., one brother, David Duke and wife Patricia of Rocky Mount, N.C., two grandchildren, Jonathan Dunlow and wife Jamie, Melissa Smithson and six great grandchildren.
The family wishes to express a special thanks to her best friend Doris Gentileni for her care and support and to the wonderful caregivers at Parson's and her hospice nurse, Tammy Bruan and her angels, Kelsey and Kayla.
A funeral service will be held at 11AM Tuesday, September 11, 2012 in Sturtevant Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Nelson F. Fields. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 7-8PM. Joyce served the Lord with gladness all the days of her life.
