Rose was born Rose V. Koran in Star Prairie, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Christof Koran and Seraphine wolf. Her parents moved from Wisconsin to St. Paul, Minnesota. Her father was a carriage maker and her mother a homemaker. Rose's parents divorced and her mother married George Peyton Riley. When her mother remarried she gave both of her daughters the name Peyton. So when Rose went through school and life events, she went by the name Rose V. Peyton.
