She was known as Leona all her life, the daughter of Clarence Knapp and Emma Amanda (McADAMS) SMITH, Leona married 1 Jul 1924 in Pella, Marion, Iowa to Arie Francis VANDER STOEP son of Klaas and Neltje "Nellie" (NOTEBOOM) VANDER STOEP. Leona give birth to one child Emma Corene VANDER STOEP.

Leona was the daughter of Clarence K. and Emma (McADAMS) SMITH. Three years after the death of her father in 1901, the family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado. She attended Central College in Pella, for two years, after which she went into Nurses Training at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1923. On July 1, 1924 she was married to Arie VANDER STOEP of Maurice, Iowa. The family took up residence in Orange City in 1928 where Leona immediately became involved in her chosen career of nursing. Her active nursing career covered a span of 42 years.
She was a member of the American Reformed Church, and in earlier years was active in the Women's Mission group. She had also been a member of the Orange City Women's Club and Northwestern College Auxiliary.
As one of the Pioneers of the Orange City Tulip Festival, she served as chairperson of the Queen's Coronation Committee for a number of years. This interest evolved into her Tulip Festival scrapbook project. These books are considered a complete festival record and are referred to as authentic information by steering committee members. At her request these books will be turned over to the Northwestern college Ramaker Library, so they will be available for continued reference and research.
Survivors include her husband, her daughter and son-in-law, Corene and Arie L. KOOLE of Sheldon; two grandsons and two great grand-daughters, Frank WARNER III and his daughter, Bridget of Maple Plain, Minn. and Neal and Kay KOOLE and their daughter Kathleen Marie of Orange City. She is also survived by one sister, Corene RYAN of Howell, Mich. and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Frank WARNER IV, and two brothers and five sisters.
